The Excellence Awards

The AUSIT Excellence Awards recognise excellent work done by individuals and organizations operating in all sectors of the translating and interpreting (T&I) industry. They encourage best practice, professionalism, quality, innovation and outstanding contributions to the translating industry.

The National AUSIT Excellence Awards 2009 are open to all Australia-based practitioners with NAATI accreditation or equivalent qualifications, and organisations with an interest in translating and interpreting.

Jill Blewett Memorial Lecture

The late Jill Blewett played an important role in the early development of the interpreting and translating profession in Australia. From 1976 to 1982 she was Senior Lecturer with the Community Language Program at the Department of Tertiary and Further Education in Adelaide, subsequently becoming Coordinator of the Level 3 Interpreting and Translating Course at the SA College of Advanced Education.  In 1979 she was appointed to the SA State Accreditation Panel for Translators. With this background Jill was well suited for her appointment to the Board of Directors of the National Accreditation Authority for Translators & Interpreters in July in 1983 for a three-year term.  In July 1986 this was extended for a further  term.  Her initial appointment to the Board was to represent the education/training aspects of the interpreting and translating profession. In addition to this, she was a member of the NAATI Steering Committee which was responsible for the establishment of the criteria and format of the Level 4 courses and its NAATI tests as well as for the development of NAATI guidelines for the distribution of interpreting and translating courses in Australia.  She also served as Chairperson of the NAATI Qualifications Assessment & Advisory Committee, which is responsible for NAATI approved interpreting and translating courses in Australia and for the assessment of overseas interpreting and translating qualifications.

Jill was an interpreting and translating practitioner and fought to establish high standards and to regulate the profession. Through her efforts, Australia is recognised internationally as being a leader in the field of community interpreting. She was admired by all who knew her for the concern she showed and the encouragement she gave to individuals.  As a tribute to Jill Blewett, AUSIT organises an annual Jill Blewett Memorial Lecture in conjunction with its National Annual General Meeting.

This year we are honoured by the guest speaker Peter Goldsworthy. Dr Goldsworthy is an Australian writer and medical practitioner. He has won awards for his short stories, poetry, novels, and operalibretti. In “A Reader's Guide to Contemporary Australian Poetry” he has been described as "one of the most skilled and satisfying poets in Australia". His work has been translated into several languages. Dr Goldsworthy has a strong interest in different languages and AUSLAN in particular has a prominent place in his work.
